The Family Of God.

Does God have a family? Oh yes he does! The family of God is a very large one and so full of glory. Indeed, for some people, this may not be an easy thing to grasp. God is so great and all powerful; in a class of his own. He is sufficient in himself and all things are for him and came by him. Why does he need a family? And who is fit enough to belong in there?

In the entire universe, God made so many things; some of which we know, and many others that are yet to be discovered. In the beginning as reported in the Book of Genesis, God created the heaven and earth and everything else. He made the planet, made the stars, put the waters in their places, created the birds, fish, all other animals and made man.

We also know that aside the terrestrial beings in God’s creation, there are also celestial beings; Cherubs, Seraphs, Living creatures, Elders, Angels etc.

There are also the damned creatures; Satan, demons and fallen angels. These ones are cut off from God and their fate is sealed according to the Scriptures. They are only bidding time until the time appointed for their destruction.

The household of God, as we can see is a very large one and every single thing God created has a role to play in his household. However, among those beings found in God’s household are those named as his family. In Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 3:14-15, he said, “For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named

The word patria translated as family in the above verse has a more specific connotation than we know in the English language. Patria means a lineage running back to some progenitor or ancestry; of a paternal descent. In the generic sense, all of God’s creatures are members of his household. However, there are some among them who are not just created but begotten.

BEGOTTEN: This is what changes the narrative. The Bible says that the Lord Jesus began a race in God’s universe that never before existed; those born of the Father himself. These are a special breed in God’s household. From the creation until the Lord Jesus, no one knew of such beings.

Jesus Christ is the Word of God who was incarnated through Mary and lived on earth as a man. The Bible says he relinquished his Heavenly glory and took on a lesser form and in living as a man, he humbled himself unto death, i.e. the death on a cross (Philippians 2:5-11). The Word of God made flesh, Jesus Christ, the only begotten of the Father was subjected to spiritual death for the sins of the world (2 Corinthians 5:21).

The third day after his death, he was raised up from the dead by the power of God Romans 8:11, Ephesians 1:19-20. You have to understand that this is not just about his physical body being animated, else he wouldn’t have been the first to be raised from the dead. What we are looking at here is the impossible; coming out of spiritual death. No one ever came out of spiritual death. Every man that died and was raised eventually died again never to be raised anymore. The moment any of God’s beings took on the nature of sin, they were cut off from God forever with no means of attaining to nature of God. But the Lord Jesus was the first man to take on sin, die and be raised up from spiritual death.

No one ever had this privilege. Hebrews 1:5, For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son. Today I have become your Father”? Or again, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son”?

No angel, man or any other being was referred to as God’s begotten from the dead until Jesus Christ. Revelation 1:5 “and from Jesus the Messiah, the witness, the faithful one, the firstborn from the dead

This is what began the new race of men who are known as the patria of God; men who are God’s progeny; not created, not made, but begotten. In the household of God, there are created beings and the begotten. These begotten ones are in the very class and nature of God. In the Gospel according to John 1:12-13 we understand that, “as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”

The above scripture clearly shows how the family of God starts growing. Those who receive the Lord Jesus and believe on his name, receive the power to become God’s sons and it’s interesting to note how their ancestry is called out. These were born of God and not of any of the aforementioned things in the verse.

In the household of God, there are created beings and the begotten.

The Family of a God is a family of love and oneness; oneness with God and oneness with one another. This is an inseparable bond that is only possible by love. If you have believed and have come into Christ, let it be known to you that you are now not only in the household of God, but the name of Christ is named upon you because you are now in the family of God. You are the very begotten of the Father and you have many brethren; Jesus Christ, our Lord being the Firstborn. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren (Romans 8:29).

To round things up, lets back up again to Ephesians 3:15 for a moment; …of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named. Here we are introduced to the locations of God’s entire family. Some members of the family are on earth and some others are in Heaven. Those on earth are the ones who have been commissioned to extend the reach of God’s family and to bring in many more others until the end of all things. These are the ones with a physical body and are heralding the Gospel of the Kingdom all over the world. The family of God in Heaven are those who have passed on from the earth realm either through death or by translation and are waiting for all the work on earth to be done. Those in the family (in Heaven) who passed on to glory through death do not have a physical body. Their spirits are clothed with glory and are also awaiting the redemption at the end of all things.

Here is a word of encouragement to anyone who has lost a loved one to death. If the person was in God’s family, weep no longer. Don’t be exceedingly sorrowful. They are not actually lost. Though you may not see them in this realm, they are very much alive and at peace with the Lord. They are all in league with us to finish our course with joy and very soon, when the Lord calls us home or when he returns, we shall meet them very much alive and be reunited forever with them in the Lord. Let this thought encourage you.

If you are not named in God’s family, you are not doomed forever if you would go back to John 1:12-13 and take action. When you receive the Lord Jesus Christ and believe in salvation he brought by openly declaring in the presence of witnesses, your new birth will happen and God will be to you a Father and you, his child. Contact a Christian near you; someone with a testimony of good works and a godly character to lead you as to what to do. You could always reach out to me as well in the Contact form and I would respond to you. God bless you.
